Operation codename: Sabine During 1941 the Germans conquered the whole of Europe up to the south by Greece, crossing the Mediterranean and moving across the western desert of North Africa towards the main British bases in Egypt. In Iraq, further to the east, the Germans promised Iraqis who possessed large reserves of oil, financial and military assistance from Germany to help Iraqis free their country from the British. Relying on the support Iraqis attacked the RAF base Habbaniya 60 miles west of Baghdad, lying beside the road to Damascus.
