The supporting naval forces include 3 battleships, 1 escort carrier and numerous cruisers and destroyers. Once ashore, the American troops encounter difficulties advancing inland due to Japanese resistance and difficult terrain.

The fleet includes the carriers Zuikaku, Shokaku, Junyo and Hiyo, battleships Musashi, Kongo and Haruna with a number of cruisers and destroyers. Its task is to repel the ongoing US invasion of Attu, but the action will be called off immediately, as the island will be conquered by the Americans before before the Japanese task force can depart.

May 29, 1943: In the Aleutian Islands - without warning the remainder of Japanese forces attackes Americans near Massacre Bay. This is recorded as one of the largest banzai charges of the Pacific campaign. Led again by Colonel Yamasaki, the attack penetrates so deep into U.S. lines that Japanese soldiers encountered rear-echelon units of the Americans. After furious, brutal, often hand-to-hand combat, the Japanese force are virtually exterminated.
May 30, 1943: In the Aleutian Islands - US forces complete the occupation of Attu Island. American losses are reported as 600 dead and 1200 wounded. Japanese losses are given as 2350 killed (including many suicides) and 28 wounded have been captured. Among the dead is identified by Dr. Nabuo Tatsuguchi, a Japanese Christian doctor who studied medicine in the United States in the 1930s. His detailed diary, which is found with him, will provide the primary source for the Japanese perspective on the battle of Attu.
